The Abode of The Self: The First House

Written by Merve Ay

The work, ‘The First House’, of the performance and installation artist, Chiharu Shiota now awaits its visitors at the Zorlu Center Performance Arts Center until 8 October 2015.

Curated by Gülru Vardar, Chiharu Shiota completed the installation named ‘The First House’ in nine days and used 150 thousand metres of wool thread. The work, which is defined as ‘The House of Self’, is interpreted by Shiota as having new beginnings with the individual in the centre. The colour of ‘The First House’, which is being exhibited in the world for the first time, symbolises blood and life.
The artist, who perceives the blood to be a means of expressing everything that is “inside”, does not like to put a distance between her work and the audience.
