HİLYE-İ ŞERİF AND ROSARY MUSEUM OPENED

Hilye-i Şerif (Ode to Prophet) and Rosary Museum by Istanbul Art and Civilization Foundation was opened in recently restored Siyavuşpaşa Madrasah in Eminönü.

Opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the museum features rare handicraft examples. 75 Hilye-i Şerifs
and 500 rosaries are exhibited according to the press statement of Turkish Presidency. In his opening speech,
Erdoğan expressed his appreciation that such a madrasah was restored and transformed into a museum. After
his visit, President was presented with a rosary by Zekai Şenyurt, made up of 36 ivory beads decorated with Ottoman
sultans’ signatures and portraits.The significance of the museum exhibiting rosaries made up of special historic
gems and numerous works which shed light on Islamic history in a 500 years old madrasah building, was underlined. Islamic Art and Civilization Foundation Chairman Mehmet Çebi marked that some works were contributed to the museum by Syrian Islamic history experts. Built in 1591 on Süleymaniye Mosque’s lot overlooking the sea, Siyavuşpaşa Madrasah was restored by General Directorate for Foundations and handed over to Istanbul Art and Civilization Foundation. Museum with significance for Hilye-i Şerif and rosary arts, has a major function in preserving the present for the future and exhibiting historicity.
