From The Balkans To The World: Goran Bregovic

Written by Mustafa Özkan

GORAN BREGOVIC, WHO IS THE FIRST NAME TO COME TO MIND WHEN SPEAKING
OF BALKAN MUSIC, WILL COME TO TURKEY FOR A SERIES OF CONCERTS IN MAY
AND AUGUST.

Goran Bregovic was born in Sarajevo in 1950 to a Serbian mother and Croatian father. When he was 16 years of age, he left his violin training unfinished at the conservatory and founded a band called Bijelo Dugme. Bijelo, which became the most famous band in Yugoslavia in such a short period of time, composed its first album in 1974 and first film music in the year 1978. However, he became a world-renowned musician in 1988. This was through the film musics of ‘Time of the Gypsies’ directed by Emir Kusturica… The song ‘Ederlezi’, which has become ingrained within our memories, is still remembered throughout the world. Bregovic has also composed some fabulous songs in the movies ‘Arizona Dream’ and ‘Underground’.

THE CONCERT CALENDER

Goran Bregovic, who we have come to know with his songs reflecting the deep traces of the Balkan culture, will visit Turkey once again in May 2015. He will be performing in Ankara on May 6, in Istanbul on May 7, in Izmir on May 8 and in Bursa on August 12 and will once again bring that “colorful” atmosphere of Sarajevo and the Balkans back to Turkey.
